Part of having a professional web presence for today's artists is being involved in the correct networks online and knowing the keys to using them well. This knowledge can increase your fan base and further your business. For A List and Description of the Top Social Networks Online click here. These are the Eight Keys to Social Networking Online:

Be Effective
As an artist who has a busy schedule and a million ideas every day, it is best to pick two or three online social networks (OSNs- like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to join and maintain. One should probably be reserved for your family and friends while the other(s) can be used to network with people in the same field or to build interest in your brand.

Be Active
Get on your preferred networks more than once per week (I recommend you choose one to visit daily). Update your status; comment on other people's statuses. Find new “friends” with similar interests. If someone has posted a question you know how to answer, help them out.

Be Unique
Personalize your page if you can. MySpace, Twitter and Ning all allow for different backgrounds and graphics to be used. Try to plant your brand everywhere you can, without being tacky.

Be Cordial
Promote others online as well. If someone wrote a blog post or article that is extremely helpful or interesting, post about it on Facebook or Twitter. If all your posts are shameless self-plugs then people will eventually get tired of you (translation: only your mother will continue to follow you online, if she knows how).

Be Patient
Don't join an OSN and send out hundreds of friend requests each day (unless you're Oprah). Take it slow as you begin to post useful content. Find people who are posting useful and interesting content and see who they are friends with, or who they are following. Become friends/followers of a few of these people at a time and expand your network from there.

Be Genuine
It is easy to say things you don't mean when online. You don't have to see the people you communicate with online, so it is easy to flit about the web making insincere comments. People can tell if you really took the time to read their posts; they can tell if you really care about what they're saying. We all know the old adage “If you don't have any real support/advice/interest/thoughts/opinions/feelings to tweet about what someone is saying, then don't tweet at all.”

Be Professional
Your online presence is a VITAL part of your brand; therefore, your social networks online are probably not the place to bash people or to talk about your seriously wild & crazy adventures…unless that is part of the image you want to portray.

Be Linked
On your blog, set up links to your OSNs that you want people to befriend you on. Include links on your websites, newsletters and e-mails. The people who are interested will find you on your networks and establish a connection with you.If this article was helpful to you, you may also like: What to Include in Your Artist Website and How to Promote It, How to Make a Great Artist's Résumé: What to Include to Make Your Résumé Stand Out, or How to Build the Best Business Card and What it Should Include (for Artists).

Most bloggers use Digg as a method to improve the Search Rankings for their blog or website. However, many bloggers also exercise practices that could well earn the Blogger a “google slap” and they may find themselves sandboxed if they aren't careful. This article provides information on how you, as a blogger and a member of the Social community can participate in a more meaningful manner.

The one thing that all experts agree on, is not to Digg your own articles. Let me say that again, do not Digg your own articles! You need one of the other Diggers to do it, preferably a power user.

So, where does this leave Bloggers? If you shouldn't Digg our own posts, should they self promote themselves to their Digg friends?

This then inevitably leads to the question: So how do Diggers know to Digg your posts? How do you benefit from the “goodness” that is Digg? Both very interesting questions.

Let's start with the understanding that the reason we like Digg (and the other bookmarking sites) is because Google ranks links from these site highly in the search results. Having an article in the Digg links means that we have a higher likliehood to rank for our chosen keywords.

To have an article dugg generally means that at least one person has found that article interesting and informative.

So here is a list of things that I think each blogger should do:

  1. Make sure your articles are interesting and informative (stating the obvious I know but….), don't just regurgitate information. Develop a voice, be controversial if you must but do something different
  2. As a Blogger, make sure you have syndication icons on your posts. Share This has a nice little plug in for blogs and Only Wire has an API that bloggers can use in their posts to encourage syndication. Include other syndication links like MIXX as well.
  3. Offer a subscription service to your Blog, so that your readers receive automatic notification of new posts. The Feedburner service is excellent for this.
  4. Add syndication links in the footer of the RSS feed, if you can. Feedburner is also great for the this
  5. Some autoresponders can also be configured to automatically notify your subscribers of your posts
  6. Use TwitterFeed to notify your Twitter followers of your posts.

However, the final decision on whether to Digg an article or not, lies with your Readers.

As readers, I feel that you should make a conscious effort to syndicate posts of merit. When you read someone elses blog and find their information interesting, Digg, Mixx, Stumble and Tweet. Install the ShareThis and StumbleUpon toolbar to make this easier. Add the Mixx and SocialPoster links in your bookmarks toolbar.

By being an active member of the Social community, you should also receive the same courtesy back. The Law of Attraction in action.

For Bloggers though, the single most helpful thing you can do to get your articles syndicated is to make theminteresting, informative and different and making it easy to read them will go a very long way to getting “syndication”.

In a world where technological advancements assure a culture and society dictated by constant change, it is inevitable that today's fixtures are one day tomorrow's fading memory. We live in a world of upgrades and updates. Despite this, the masses do not live or operate on future, technological possibilities. There may be an expectancy or desire for these things, but, for the most part, our lives are predominantly set in the current trend. We understand the impermanent and the transitory. We are comfortable living in the now, but we are also ready to adjust with the next update.

Ironically, the current trend ushered in by advancing technology involves living a life of constantly upgrading and updating the public on our personal endeavors and lives. At the heart of all this is that which many of us have come to embrace: social networking sites. While time is sure to find a new replacement, the only thing that matters is the fact that, for the moment, social networking sites and their premise of using technology as a principal means to establishing connectedness and community have become a staple of contemporary life. Have you recently left a comment on a friend's picture, written on somebody's wall, updated your status, posted a video, or tweeted?

Over the last ten years, and even more so within the last five, the internet has served as the sole breeding grounds for the rise and evolution of such online giants, social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. Although each has had its predecessors and copycats, there is no denying the impact and place of each across their respective demographics. The common denominator between the previously listed, nonetheless, has been their ability to tap into a certain audience, a generation that has found itself at the forefront of this social networking revolution. This paper will attempt to address both the observable and foreseeable effects of social network sites on adolescents from a psychological perspective, specifically with an interest of ultimately understanding the impact of these sites on the quality of their personal, face-to-face relationships.

Social networking sites can be defined as web-based services “that allow individuals to 1) create a public or semi-public profile within a regulated system, 2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and 3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system” (Boyd, and Ellison 1). The way in which these things are accomplished varies from site to site. In examining the role and influence of sites like Myspace and Facebook in the particular culture of teenagers, it is first beneficial to classify these systems as social network sites, rather than social networking sites. The reason being is the key distinction between what is done in an existing network over the act of intentional networking. “Networking” is characterized by relationship initiation, often between strangers. Although these sites surely enable users to take advantage of traditional networking opportunities, adolescents are primarily communicating with people who are already in their existing and extended social network (Boyd, and Ellison 1).

With the aforementioned definition in mind, a better understanding of this subject also requires of one to eliminate any presuppositions that function off the notion that all teenagers are engaged in these online communities. Contrary to popular opinion, a 2006 study conducted by Pew Internet and American Life Project yielded surprising results that indicated only 55% of online teenagers had profiles on these social network sites (Lenhart, and Madden 3). As of 2008, however, Pew released new findings that indicated a considerable jump. By February of last year, 65% of teenagers reportedly used online social network sites (Goldsmith). Either way, both studies serve as a reminder against over generalizing adolescent involvement.

Regardless of the statistics that report and distinguish between involved or disconnected adolescents, however, there is no debate surrounding the strong presence of these social network sites in youth culture. Whether or not a given adolescent has a profile or openly rejects involvement is no longer the question; nearly every adolescent is aware and has an opinion of sites like Facebook and Myspace. Initial teenage obsession and infatuation with these sites may have very well begun to fade, but their place and standing in the lives of teenagers is ever-present (boyd 2). Thus, the pressing question revolves around an issue of consequence that appears very probable in light of these social network infrastructures. Are teenagers slowly losing the ability to socially engage in personal relationships and face-to-face interaction as they more quickly adapt to technological gains that seemingly remove necessity for the former? Are the quality of relationships satirically weakening as a direct result of these social network sites?

Due to the fact that this topic and the growth of social network sites is relatively new, there has been little research that addresses the aforesaid, especially because there is no study or current research that could possibly see into the future and reveal long-term effects. Because of this, answering these difficult questions requires of us to work systematically and somewhat off plausibility beyond what can currently be observed. For one, it is necessary to review some of the activities that adolescents participate in when they join these social network sites. Secondly, we must hypothesize motives for their online actions; and lastly, our goal is to use the conclusions from the previous steps to formulate a more concrete opinion of the relational impact social network sites have and will have on teenagers.

To begin with, social network sites allow teenagers to publicize personal information. The foundational component to all social network sites is the profile page and the ability of users to add personal information or customize content that others will inevitably see. While more technologically adept teenagers create elaborate profile pages (a common occurrence on sites like Myspace), the simple-minded, less tech-savvy need no more than the click of a mouse or the keys of a keyboard to upload pictures, videos, or post comments. The key here is that social network sites enable teenagers to take once personal and private social interactions between friends into the public sphere for others to witness: friends are publicly articulated, profiles are publicly viewed, and comments are publicly visible (Boyd & Ellison 26).

This is where an integration of further numbers can be helpful. Statistics from a 2007 Pew study showed that 91% of all teenagers who have Myspace, Facebook, or other social network profiles use the sites to stay in touch or make plans with friends they see frequently (Lenhart, and Madden). Of the same polled, 82% additionally used the sites to stay in touch with friends who were rarely seen in person. Conversely, only 49% actually used the site to actively seek out and make new friends, the aspect of networking that was discussed earlier. These numbers, along with the fact that many of these profiles are only visible to established friends within the existing network, demonstrate that teenagers mainly use social network sites as an addition to pre-existing social constructions and friendships. This provides us with great insight into some of the cognitive motivations behind many of their online activities on these sites.

Social network sites do more than just allow adolescents to publicize information; they encourage them to amplify their aspects of their personal lives. From a theory standpoint (Elkind's imaginary audience), the common and often exaggerated belief among developing teenagers that everyone is watching, scrutinizing, or envying one's every move, relationship, or article of clothing is, in effect, made a greater reality through these online communities (Oda 251). Adolescence, in general, is understood as a time of social learning and developing. There is an elevated power in the social environment, from dress to language, and social network sites certainly foster a greater opportunity for adolescents to be aware of this.

Yes, social network sites may provide troubled teenagers with a place to feel accepted, and there are undeniable positives to be gained from the ease at which adolescents can access, communicate, or share information. However, in the context of youth culture, these sites typically serve as reinforcement to the social status and lives teenagers have already established at school. Perhaps without even recognizing the dilemma they have created, teenagers leave themselves more susceptible and vulnerable to being judged by peers (Synder, Carpenter, and Jo Slausen 11). It is no wonder that so many teenagers spend considerable amounts of time attempting to perfect or embellish their projected image. While real life certainly has its boundaries, social network sites not only allow teens to put their best face forward, but almost leave them with no choice than to do so. As a result, it is clear that social network sites have become primary forces in terms of how adolescents construct identity and self-worth or image.

On the other hand, we cannot ignore the statistics that emphasize that the majority of teenagers using social network sites are connected with individuals that they have real-life contact or communication with. Moreover, teenagers choose who they 'befriend', 'add to their network', or 'follow', all with the option of deleting or 'blocking' certain individuals. Even in light of all the negativity that can naturally result from these publicly displayed profiles (i.e. cyber bullying), there is also a limitation to the extent of the public. Thankfully, sites like Myspace and Facebook allow users to customize privacy settings. 66% of teens on social network sites restrict access to information on their profile (Goldsmith). In fact, most teens that restrict access to their profiles provide an alternative perspective to the privacy issue: sharing their information with a specific set of people does not necessarily mean that the information is in the public domain (Denmead).

With all of these factors to consider, we are still left to wonder whether or not these social network sites actually add or detract from the quality of personal relationships and face-to-face communication. Are teenagers currently losing touch with reality, socially isolating themselves or at least headed in that direction? Or, is it possible that these social network sites are actually providing a legitimate avenue to strengthening relationships and socializing?

Seeing the possibility for both outcomes appears the most useful. To begin with, research cannot necessarily confirm whether or not social network cites isolate individuals or weaken the quality of personal, face-to-face interaction. While there have been recent studies that attempt to argue for either position, there is simply no concrete way to assess this because results are based on how study participants feel, rather than what their personal relationships actually look like. There are currently no known methods that could measure the quality of relationships beyond a survey approach.

As far as a practical response to those that argue social network sites actually promote isolation, the numbers regarding the individuals and relationships that actually compile the networks of most adolescents stand in direct contrast to that theory. Basically, social network sites provide adolescents and users with the benefits of sharing and communicating with the people they want, almost whenever or from wherever they want (Denmead). In other words, social network sites can help individuals build upon friendships and relationships that existed prior to these technological advancements. Furthermore, it is extremely common for social network users to make plans through the site that set a later meeting date for personal interaction (Goldsmith). Another point to consider deals with the fact that the majority of adolescents are still confronted with personal, face-to—face interaction on a daily basis during all the hours spent at school. Social network sites will not take that away.

On the other hand, it is equally important to recognize the potential for social network sites to weaken the quality of relationships for teenagers. If, for instance, each subsequent generation of adolescents were to devote more and more time to online activities on these social networking sites, it would appear to weaken the ability of adolescents to engage in meaningful, face-to-face interaction. Teenagers cannot spend their lives in front of a computer. The ability to communicate in person and the development of social skills cannot be taught from in front of a screen.

Due to the possibility of the aforementioned, it is primarily the responsibility of parents to be aware of the amount of time that their children spend on these social network sites (Macgill 15). It is important to understand the potential for negative to result from social network activities; however, one cannot undermine the strengthening effects that sites like Myspace and Facebook can have on existing relationships. Beyond the simple publicity or projection of teenagers' lives and updates, these online communities also allow friends and family to remain connected over physical boundaries and the restrictions of busy schedules. Social network sites may very well find themselves outdated or old news in a matter of months or years, but as far as the numbers are concerned, the current rise in their usage does not point to that happening anytime soon. Because of this and the apparent amount of influence that these sites have on adolescents and youth culture, it is critical that, above all else, we make ourselves aware of the positive, negative, and potential effects they might have on teenagers so that we can be proactive or respond accordingly.

Social bookmarking is hot. If you are a webmaster and never heard of it before you're missing a lot. In short social bookmarking allows you to get massive traffic to your site and also gain lots of backlinks to improve your search engine ranking.

If you're interested in social bookmarking here are some useful tips for you:

1. Submit only the best.
If you have a blog it would be a waste of time to bookmark each of your post. Spend your time wisely and bookmark only your best posts. If you submit only your best blog posts you will be known as the guy/gal who carries great stories and that's is a good thing. You want people to flock to your website whenever you submit new stories so you need to be consistent and give them only the best.

2. Submit only to the best.
You can easily make social bookmarking sites by using free scripts available on the internet. That is why you find so many online bookmarking sites today. However, only a handful of them are important enough to worth mentioning. You should submit your sites or blogs only to ones having high Page Rank (PR) and used by millions on people. Sites like Digg, Propeller, Furl, Delicious, Connotea, Folkd, etc.

3. Backlink or traffic?
What is it that you wish to gain by submitting your websites to social bookmarking sites? If you are trying to sell something through your site then social bookmarking won't help much in terms of direct sales. The traffic coming from these sites are “social traffic” which means they are not in the mood of buying anything. They are looking for interesting stories and if they feel it's good enough they will share it and let their friends know about it. Social bookmarking is great for building links so you should aim on that. If you can write interesting stories/articles people will keep sharing your stories which mean more sites linking to yours. In the end it can seriously boost your search engine ranking.

4. Automate when possible.
Either you hire somebody to do all your bookmarking or use a software. Any of these two will save you lots of precious time. If you go for software there are some you can use like SocialBot and SENuke.

5. Do it slowly.
When you choose to automate your bookmarking effort you should practice caution. It is so easy to get carried away and end up busting your sites off the search engines. If you submit your site to hundreds of social bookmarking sites everyday you will definitely see some serious penalty from the search engines. They may even kick you out from their index for that. I know because I've lost some of my sites that way. Submit your sites slowly to the most important social bookmarking sites and add some randomness while you're doing it. Use different titles and descriptions on every other submission.

You’ve heard about the trends, the press releases, the news updates, and even the hype of today’s social networking sites. You’re finally getting a handle on what Web 2.0 really means, how it affects your online habits, and what it may even mean for your company or business. Still, social networking has also opened up new pathways into the world of social bookmarking.

Social bookmarking is the process of using tags to ‘code’ and sort information on your website, blog, or set of links so that both you and other users can find them easily. Social bookmarking sites such as Reddit, Digg, Del.ici.ous, and De.lirio.us are just a few examples of today’s popular sites that offer the best of the rising trend. These sites allow you to register to set up a profile; you then create a list of interesting web findings to keep as an ongoing ‘file’, and/or share with other users of the site. Some sites offer you the ability to vote on others’ topics or submissions, while others just let you browse and peruse at your leisure. The idea behind these sites is to provide innovative ways to share information; whether it’s user-generated or not, social bookmarking sites are essentially sharing tools.

Your creativity can literally explode when you learn to make use of social bookmarking sites effectively. Instead of doing firsthand online research on a particular topic, tapping into your social bookmarking network can bring forward many more relevant, timely, and thorough articles than you could probably find on your own. It’s a much more effective research opportunity, and can give you a wider perspective and viewpoint on almost any topic imaginable. Because tagging is very similar to keyword coding, it’s easier than ever before to find specific themes, subjects, and topics without having to sort through hundreds of blog posts, articles, or books.

Social bookmarking sites boost your creativity by encouraging web-specific research, and may also increase your web searching skills. Although there are a variety of social bookmarking sites to choose from, finding your subject and content is easy by searching a few of today’s top sites. A great resource for recommended sites can be found at Blinklist .  Blinklist is a bookmarking tool that lets you sort, search, share, and create lists from any computer. It works similar to Digg in structure, allowing users to submit an approved ‘blink’ for worthwhile sites and links.

Social bookmarking, along with the upswing in social networking sites, are here to stay! Almost any industry, category, and subject can be found in full scope through the use of social bookmarking sites. Information that is now catalogued and sorted through easy keyword and tag filters provides an efficient and productive tool for learning, creativity, and extended research.

Websites like Digg.com, Slashdot.org, Reddit.com, Delicious, Mixx, Stumbleupon and others, are perfect to promote faster a blog or a website if you have some very strong content. First, you have to submit your content to those websites, by including a SEO optimized description (you can see on the home page of social bookmarking websites what kind of content is preferred) and the users will rate the articles they like, sharing them with others. This way, you will get both viral and instantaneous traffic. Large websites, such as Digg.com, can bring you tens of thousands of visitors in a less than 48 hours. Social bookmarking websites are an useful marketing tool for website promotion, internet marketing, blog marketing and viral marketing.

By using social networks, users worldwide will find easier the content of your website/ blog, unless it has already been bookmarked. Thus, an informative and creative website will achieve a higher position in search engines due to the traffic generated. As more back links a website has, as higher it will be ranked by search engines. By using multiple keywords, you can tag multiple categories.

Besides bringing visitors to your website, social bookmarking sites offer help you to stock, organize, search and administrate your online pages (article, content, images), in effective ways. Other benefits of using social bookmarking sites are:

ü People with similar preferences can find each other, creating communities of users based on certain topics and interests;

ü Social networking allows to a specific group (the members of an organization, for example) to send efficiently and free to one another various resources of common interest;

ü Social networking help people to discover new aspects of a subject they are interested in, by staying in touch with other online users;

ü Most social bookmarking websites offer useful tools to allow people's access to information even if they are offline (RSS subscription, blogging software)

It should be considered that those visitors don't watch advertisements and don't post the nicest comments if they are not comfortable with your content. It has been proved that 1% is the number of those who can become potential subscribers of a blog if they like and appreciate the things they read about; also, there are only 18 clicks on one ad to 30,000 visitors. You may not gain any new subscribers.

The main reason to write articles for social bookmarking websites is to generate traffic on your website through potential subscribers, even if they represent a small number of all those who visit your website. On the other hand, when people like what they are reading, they send backlinks to your content by posting some interesting facts about your website/ blog.

If you manage to write in a couple of months some articles good enough to reach Digg.com homepage, you can get as many subscribers as you'd get in 6 months without using this kind of promotion.

There are blogs that reached thousands of subscribers through articles like this in just 30 days since they have been released.

The bad part is that there are big chances for your website to be interrupted and affected by the tens of thousands of visitors coming in that range of 48 hours. Some people have received 125,000 visits to exceptional pieces of content in just one day.

The 10 Largest Social Bookmarking Sites are:

ü Digg.com

ü Yahoo! Buzz

ü Facebook

ü Technorati.com

ü StumbleUpon.com

ü Del.icio.us.com

ü Kaboodle.com

ü Reddit.com

ü Mixx.com

ü Propeller.com

How does it work?

“Social networks aren't just for fun anymore. Some companies use them to accomplish serious business.” (Eileen Feretic, Baseline IT magazine, the August edition)

Search engines usually list on the first pages the most relevant and recent information, process known as indexing. As higher a website's position is as more visitors it will have. When a larger number of websites link to the content submitted, Google's algorithm will analyze it, establishing if it has strong and relevant content. Each social bookmarking website will link back to your website, so it's recommended to submit it to several social networks.

Most people search for topics of interest by using both search engines and social networks. It is easier for them to find your website's content on the list of relevant topics resulted on a social bookmarking site. If the content submitted is highly rated, it will appear on the front page, generating an incredible large amount of traffic, as hundreds of thousands of people visit that page daily.

Social bookmarking is free and public, so you can drive quality highly targeted visitors any time, with no costs, only by taking advantage of their full potential.

Each social network allows you to select the niche category that fits your content. For example, if you wrote about a certain medical condition or about a beauty therapy, you just have to select the “Health Care” category or the one related to medical issues. Some bookmarking websites provide subcategories, making easier the process of submitting or searching for a certain topic.

It is also important to build a powerful social bookmarking profile through constant activity, in order to gain more exposure and traffic. You can start doing this by adding as many friends as possible; even if you don't really know those people, remember that this is the way things works. Everybody does it! Secondly, you must submit quality content on a regular basis and not just from time to time. You can try Google Trends, in order to find out what are the most popular topics of the moment. It is all about labeling the web, while opening doors to multiple marketing strategies through the collective voice. Moreover, you have to be actively involved with the community, to share your opinion and draw attention on your profile. Don't forget to comment and rate other bookmarked pages, becoming part of the community. It might necessary to remove some weird comments you'll receive; don't let them to affect you; pay more attention to the quality of your content and try not to offend anyone. Some people will even try to promote their products through their comments. It depends on you to approve or not this kind of actions, but it's better to act as a professional and to keep an accurate image of yourself.

It is recommended to set up an email account using a pseudonym. Some social bookmarking websites may expose you to spam, so it's better to avoid this situation by signing up with a different email address. Remember that you should sign up to several bookmark communities, in order to capture more page views.

Also, social networks can boost your creativity, as they offer unlimited resources, press releases, trends and topics for your content. Almost any category and area of activity is somehow present in these communities, so you can enlarge your viewpoints, gaining a wider perspective.

Tagging- what is it about?

Tags are short phrases or words that are suggestive for a certain topic. For example, if we consider an article about Madonna's concert in New York, the most recommended tags are: “Madonna's concert”, “Madonna in New York”, “New York concerts”, “Concerts in New York”, “New York events” and so on. We have to imagine what are the most common phrases used by people when they search for certain topic on the Internet.

Although the title of an article should be creative and original, if it is the same or similar with other titles that have been already used, there are less chances to be indexed by search engines. On the other hand, if it sounds completely different from other titles, it will not be recognized by search engines. Tagging a certain link will result in more exposure. You can also use tags generators; choose the right one for you by searching on Google the available options. It is recommended to use Google AdWords- https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal- a service that provides the popularity rank for each tag related to your content. It's enough to type a keyword; the program will generate all the possible words combinations, specifying how many people searched for those keywords. Thus, you can use those who have the highest rating, improving your website position in search engines.

By using these SEO tips when you submit content on a regular basis to social bookmarking websites, your own website or blog will gain the deserved exposure and traffic.

SEO [Search Engine Optimization] is more than writing keyword rich articles and hoping for the best when it comes to search engine rankings and increased site traffic. Keywords are important, but let's look at three ways to improve search engine rankings, site traffic and, consequently brand awareness by using some social media marketing techniques. There are many ways to improve the organic search rank of your URL/website; the three mentioned below are a good starting point for anyone interested in embracing the Web 2.0 generation. I'll list them first then go through each in more detail:

1.Social Media

2.Blogging

3.Disability Act: Section 508 Standards

Social Media

This is the next generation of the Internet or, Web 2.0. Social media encourages and facilitates creativity, collaboration and information sharing among users. There are a ton of options out there from vertical communities, which are industry or topic focused, to horizontal communities, which are more general, and everything in between. Let's look at some of the heavy-hitters: Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Facebook was originally developed for and by Harvard College students in 2004 and was quickly catapulted to the forefront of the Web 2.0 generation; within a year it attracted over one million members (source: http://communittes.net). MySpace was launched in 2003 and is now a popular community for artists, bands and other creative types. MySpace, more so than Facebook, allows users to customize their profile page and backgrounds, which has resulted in a large following of youths and pre-teens. Facebook, however tends to attract college-educated users 20 and up. Both MySpace and Facebook give users a easy, non-committal, non-confrontational way to reconnect with people they may have lost touch with over the years and to keep on top of what everyone is doing day-to-day. LinkedIn is a vertically focused online community to highlight and discuss the professional careers, accomplishments and aspirations of its' members. It is quickly becoming a legitimate research tool during the interview process; companies and candidates can learn detailed information about each other before the face-to-face interview.

So, why is this important? It's important to know where your target audience is online. If you sell youth oriented products; MySpace should be a part of your social media marketing strategy. LinkedIn and Facebook are social networks you'd want to consider for educated consumers 20 years old and up.

Many companies, large and small, have tried valiantly to advertise their products in these mediums and many have failed. People use online communities to relax and discuss topics that interest them and have been largely unresponsive to hard-sell tactics (i.e. call-to-action messaging, coupons, etc.) of company advertisements. These tactics are for the masses and do not translate well in the smaller, more intimate settings of online communities. The companies that have been successful have followed a few simple rules of engagement: be succinct, transparent, responsive, accepting, insightful, genuine, humorous and timely. (source: The Secrets of Social Media Marketing: How to Use Online Conversations and Customer Communities to Turbo-Charge Your Business by Paul Gillin)

If you, as a company or brand, reach out to people in these communities through a group page, application, fan page or the like, don't hide your identity. Instead, engage them in conversation about your products or services. You may be amazed at the amount of response you get. (Be prepared for negative feedback as well. Negative feedback should not be ignored and should be answered genuinely and openly, not defensively.) Companies should be engaging and fun in these mediums with a lighthearted approach; Victoria's Secrets PINK is a good example. With well over one million fans on Facebook and MySpace, Victoria's Secret has developed an exclusive community called “PINK Nation” where they promote their comfy collegiate collection and entertain their members with lighthearted polls, questions, horoscopes, webisodes, exclusive offers, freebies and inside scoop.

Victoria's Secret has leveraged these two platforms to help drive traffic to and from their sites by targeting a demographic that will continually attract new and loyal customers to their products: college women.

Another interesting facet of social media are the review sites such as Yelp!, TripAdvisor, StumbleUpon, Digg, del.icio.us and Sphinn. These sites have revolutionized the way Internet users locate and share information, stories, videos and just about anything else out there. These social bookmarking sites, by design, encourage and promote the most popular stories of the moment. Members can post and promote links by voting them up or down. Instead of a complicated algorithm, a user generated ranking system moves stories to the top of the results page as they generate more positive reviews, votes and/or 'diggs'. Usually the most interesting and/or timely content is pushed to the top of the list.

So, you can see how using these tools can help drive traffic to your site and increase brand awareness. Don't be shy, promote yourself on more than one social bookmarking site or try them all. Twitter can also be used to promote content; but the difference here is that it is not a collaborative environment. When using Twitter you're status update is a drop in the bucket, but it can be useful if your followers like what you have to say and decide to pass it along by 'retweeting' your message to their followers and so on. You can retweet your own messages too, but you'll gain more ground if others do it for you – so make sure your content is interesting, entertaining or at the very least amusing. If enough people retweet your message, your topic could become a trend and show up on the “Trending Topics” list that appears on everyone's Twitter page. The trick here is, your topic must be interesting to many people; so I would not use this as a primary resource for engaging communities.

Blogging

Bloggers are plentiful, you can be a blogger in a matter of minutes and begin typing away your keyword-rich articles to promote your brand, and it's a great way to start, but there are no guarantees that anyone will come. This is real life, not a Kevin Costner movie. In addition to starting a blog, seek out influential bloggers that repeatedly talk about your products or use the same keywords or 'tags' you would like to target and reach out to them. They may not even realize your product exists and may be glad to hear from you. You can use sites like http://wwwtechnorati.com to see who is blogging about your company, products or tags simply by using their search engine – it's almost too easy.

Let me be clear; I do not recommend barging onto someone's blog to ask for help promoting your products. Instead, read their last few blog entries and comment on them, give them a compliment or flattering statement and encourage a response. Flattery is like a Disney Silver Pass in the blogosphere and can help you gain a few good brand advocates. You'll want to be careful that you choose your advocates wisely, that's why I suggest reading their blog entries, comments and viewing their profiles and the profiles of their followers. Go ahead, click on any URLs your potential brand advocate references on their profile page and make sure they are dependable, ethical and likeable. Once you have confirmed all of this, then engage them in a conversation. If you can get a few bloggers with pre-existing networks to be your official brand advocates you're one step closer to increased site traffic, brand awareness and your ultimate goal of high search engine rankings.

Disability Act: Section 508 Standards

What has this got to do with social media and SEO? Stick with me for a minute; this is a lesser known, but very important strategy to improving natural or organic search engine rankings. It will also help millions of people with vision, hearing or motor skill impairments, who require the use of internet 'readers,' enjoy the full benefits of your site (you may even gain a few additional brand advocates this way!).

Simply put, Section 508 of the disabilities act helps to ensure everyone, despite disability, can enjoy the same online information easily. Many federal and educational websites are required to comply with Section 508 standards, but it is a good idea for anyone to implement these requirements since they will make your site easy for search engines to crawl, read and categorize. Some of the Section 508 requirements are: have text equivalents to all non-text elements on your site including multimedia, a design that does not need color, images or stylesheets to function properly, text-only alternatives to files that require a applet or plug-in to view or a direct link to access and download the applet or plugin and table rows and headers must be identified in the code. (For a complete list of Section 508 standards, please visit http://www.section508.gov) Incorporating these requirements will not only improve your search engine ranking it will also give many disabled users access to your site.

These techniques, if used properly, will help increase traffic to your site, awareness of your brand and your organic search engine ranking. It does not guarantee top placement on search engines, social bookmarking sites or increased sales. Web 2.0 is still evolving, but it is changing the way people communicate with each other and with brands. Don't you want to be a part of the conversation? I know I do.

During the past couple of years, many social book marking websites and services have sprung up all over the internet.

Social book-marking websites are where you can create a free account so that you can book mark (save) all of your important websites and information free.

There are about 50-100 of such social book marking websites, but the biggest and the most popular ones are, google.com book marking, yahoo.com book marking, technorati.com book marking, furl.com, de.lici.us, del.iri.us, shadows.com, linkroll.com, magnolia.com, onlywire.com, Slashdot.com, netscape.com, reddit.com, hyperlinkomatics.com.

For sometime, many internet marketers have been trying to figure out how to capitalize on these social book-marking services to generate website traffics.

They believed that if they create free accounts at these social book-marking sites and bookmark their websites there that they could attract a few thousands of the website traffics that flock to use these social book-marking services.

However, experience has proved this to be a pipedream and ineffective for getting website traffics.

Even though almost all of these social book-marking services and websites have Google.com high page ranks, it seems that they implement a “no follow” link rule, which invalidates any link you may get from them by book- marking your websites there.

In addition, it appears that Google.com and the other major search engines do not recognize the links that you get from these social book-marking services websites.

For example, if you go to Google.com, type your website address and search for your links: (link: www.yourwebsite.com) you will not find any of your links from these social book-marking sites.

Therefore, it seems that just book marking your websites at a social book-marking websites, for an example, at reddit.com will not help boost your link popularity or Google.com page rank or to attain top 10 ranking or to get massive website traffics.

Besides, it seems that most of the people who use these social book-marking services websites are not buyers or online shoppers but may be geeks, curiosity seekers or retired people who are bored and enjoy prowling these sites to kill time.

If you have been frustrated by this, perhaps it will be wise for you to consider some of the “secret strategies”, which we have tried that seem to be helpful.

Here, they are:

(1) After you create your free accounts at these social book-marking websites, remember to validate your account by clicking on the validating link in the e-mail that they sent to you.

Then go back to the social book-marking website and login to your account and edit your member's page and include your website address.

(2) Next, submit all of your member pages to the search engines every two weeks until they begin showing up in Google.com and Yahoo.com and Msn.com search engines.

Furthermore, book mark all your social book-marking member's pages at all the social book-marking websites!

This would help boost your link popularity, Google.com page rank and help you generate free website traffics.

(3) These social book marking websites have high page ranks and most have 10,000-100,000 members, so, it may be wise to consider placing ads at their homepages.

(4) To take advantage further of their traffics, you may consider doing a joint venture with them where they agree to send an e-mail to their members to promote your products and services and you will share in the profits with them.

May these ideas and insights into Social book marking internet marketing, social book marking traffics, social book-marking websites, social book-marking services, website traffics, internet marketers, google.com book marking, yahoo.com book marking, technorati.com book marking, furl.com, de.lici.us, del.iri.us, shadows.com, linkroll.com, magnolia.com, onlywire.com, Slashdot.com, netscape.com, reddit.com, hyperlinkomatics.com, website traffics, internet marketers, Google.com, Yahoo.com, Msn.com search engines, help you to improve your internet business and be a roaring success.
